چکیده

Arctic, Antarctic and inaccessible lofty regions of Himalayas, which are geographically diverse areas and have been a constant source of inspiration, envisages a challenging field of study 'by early adirelrturers and scientists of the world. Characteristics of ice obtained at Arctic and Antarctic do not possess similar properties. Even the salient properties of snow and ice of western and central Himalayas vary due to its differing free water content. A study has been carried out based on recent Antarctic Expedition by Indian scientists and the data gathered along litha-tectonic regions of Himalayas and their characteristics have been compared, wkich brings out stratigraphic and metamorphic characteristics of the ice and snow. In the present paper, an analysis of the ice and snow properties of Arctic, Antarctic and Himalayan regions has been preknted.

Assessment of sea ice simulations in the CMIP5 models

The historical simulations of sea ice during 1979 to 2005 by the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) are compared with satellite observations, Global Ice-Ocean Modeling and Assimilation System (GIOMAS) output data and Pan-Arctic Ice Ocean Modeling and Assimilation System (PIOMAS) output data in this study. Forty-nine models, almost all of the CMIP5 climate models and earth sys...

Diversity and structure of bacterial communities in Arctic versus Antarctic pack ice.

A comprehensive assessment of bacterial diversity and community composition in arctic and antarctic pack ice was conducted through cultivation and cultivation-independent molecular techniques. We sequenced 16S rRNA genes from 115 and 87 pure cultures of bacteria isolated from arctic and antarctic pack ice, respectively. Most of the 33 arctic phylotypes were >97% identical to previously describe...

From 'third pole' to north pole: a Himalayan origin for the arctic fox.

The 'third pole' of the world is a fitting metaphor for the Himalayan-Tibetan Plateau, in allusion to its vast frozen terrain, rivalling the Arctic and Antarctic, at high altitude but low latitude. Living Tibetan and arctic mammals share adaptations to freezing temperatures such as long and thick winter fur in arctic muskox and Tibetan yak, and for carnivorans, a more predatory niche. Here, we ...

Comparison between AMSR2 Sea Ice Concentration Products and Pseudo-Ship Observations of the Arctic and Antarctic Sea Ice Edge on Cloud-Free Days

In recent years, much attention has been paid to the behavior of passive microwave sea ice concentration (SIC) products for marginal ice zones. Based on the definition of ice edges from ship observations, we identified pseudo-ship observations (PSO) and generated PSO ice edges from twelve cloud-free moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) images. Two SIC products of the advanced m...

Polar lessons learned: long-term management based on shared threats in Arctic and Antarctic environments

www.frontiersinecology.org © The Ecological Society of America T Arctic and Antarctic are profoundly different environments. The southern portion of the Arctic is dominated by continental land masses, many of which are seasonally ice-free, whereas the Arctic Ocean and its associated sea ice prevail in the highest northern latitudes. In contrast, Antarctica is a continental land mass surrounded ...
